Are we missing a trick through August?

Silhouette of a person in a hat sitting at the beach at sunset, with text: ARE WE MISSING A TRICK THROUGH AUGUST?

It's August and there's a story that's being retold… and one I've heard so many times.

Everyone's off. Nobody wants meetings. It's holiday season. Nothing really happens until September.

But is that really true, or have we just decided it is?

Because yes, some people are slowing down. But slowing down doesn't mean disappearing. It often means more time online. More headspace. A bit more openness to an actual conversation, instead of a rushed one squeezed between meetings.

Not everyone's got young kids either. Some of us have got grown-up ones who don't need us for anything except filling the fridge and doing their washing.

So, what if we change the story?

We hear "August is quiet" so many times that we stop questioning it. We just build our whole month around it. Go quiet ourselves. Stop posting. Stop inviting people to things. Stop reaching out.

And then, of course, nothing happens. But that's not proof August is dead. That's us switching off and then being surprised when it's quiet.

Meanwhile, the people who aren't juggling childcare, who've got a bit more space in their days, who are online a bit more in the evenings - they're still there. Still open, maybe be even more open to new things than usual.

And what if August is a slower month, showing us what's possible?

What if it's showing us what the other eleven months could feel like if we stopped running everything at a hundred miles an hour?

What if that spacious, calmer energy didn't have to be a once-a-year thing?

Because if easing off in August feels different - calmer, more spacious, less frantic - that's not a sign August is special. That's a sign of what's possible the rest of the year, if we stopped treating "always switched on" as the price of being in business.

And that's the whole point of prevention, not recovery. We talk about it as a mindset, but it's your calendar too. If August can hold a bit more space without everything falling apart, so can every month, if we build it in rather than wait for burnout to force it on us.

So before you write August off completely, ask yourself the same thing I'm asking myself:

Are you switching off this month, or are you curious what happens if you don't?

Small shift, massive impact, every time.
