Why more workshops won't fix it...

If one more workshop, podcast, webinar, e-book or self-help book was going to be the thing that rocked your business... we'd all be sorted by now, wouldn't we?
I've spent years teaching businesses new skills. Running workshops, webinars, Get Shit Done Days; and I've also spent a small fortune on what I used to call ‘personal development’ - more learning, more implementing, more doing.
For a long time, I thought that was the answer. Learn more, do more, get better. Stack the skills high enough and eventually I’d reach the dizzy heights of success!
But skills were never the problem - all that learning was pointed outward. New frameworks and tools, new ways of running a launch, structuring an offer, writing a post.
All useful, but none of them touched the actual thing that was in my way.
Because the thing in my way wasn't a skills gap. It was me.
It was the story I told myself about what I had to prove before I was allowed to slow down. It was the version of ‘the professional’ in my head that wasn’t allowed to admit I was tired, or unsure, or that I didn't want to do it the way everyone else was doing it. It was years of putting myself last on the list, because I was so driven to succeed.
The real shift came from understanding myself. Doing the deep work and unblocking the stuff that was keeping me stuck, no matter how many new skills I threw at it.
I'll be honest with you: some of that ‘personal development’ wasn't development at all. It was my very well-disguised way of avoiding the harder questions.
Because sitting in a workshop feels like progress. Ticking off a course feels like progress. It's tangible. You get a certificate, a workbook, and a new shiny thing to implement. All of which is much easier than sitting with the uncomfortable stuff - the negative self-talk, the boundaries you don't hold, the pattern of carrying too much for too long because somewhere along the way you decided that was what being reliable and successful looked like.
You can have every strategy, every framework, every proven system going, but if there's something underneath stopping you from using it, you'll just keep collecting more workshops and more certificates gathering dust.
I know that pattern well. I lived it.
Once I started doing the actual work - understanding what was driving me, not just what I was doing - everything else got easier. Not because I suddenly had more skills. I already had those. It's because I stopped working against myself.
Small shift, massive impact, every time.
But the shift has to be the right one. And the right one is rarely the next course.
If that's landing a bit too close to home, I'd love to talk it through with you. No pitch, no pressure - just a conversation about what's actually going on underneath.
